    Quick Summary

    Over the last several years, I’ve seen many headlines about the future of work: everything from how automation is going to destroy half the jobs in our economy in the next 10 years to how outsourcing will gut the middle-class.

    Every time I saw one of these headlines, I found it hard to determine whether the author was fear-mongering or whether we should really be worried. I also wanted to understand the opportunities of the new world of work at a deeper level.

    So this past year, wanting to dissect what was happening, I hired a PhD researcher. We spent over 100 hours getting a deeper understanding of the fundamental shifts happening in the world of work.

    The findings we uncovered are actually quite surprising and have big implications. Understanding these is important because it sets the stage for understanding why the key skill that’s the topic of this manual—insight—is going to be so important in the coming years.

    The Fundamental Attribution Error states that when we try to explain other people’s bad behavior, we tend to overemphasize their personality and underemphasize the situation they were in. This leaves people feeling unappreciated and destroys relationships. It can lead to a chain reaction of frustration, disengagement, subpar performance, further judgment, toxicity, and ultimately parting ways.

These insights are great but for this manual, we’re talking about market-based insights, where “market” is about building products, services, art, or ideas that people give their money or attention to.
