If you're reading this, you're already ahead of the game for 2019.
Here's why: The fact that you clicked on the title shows that you value hard to learn skills and durable skills.
Hard to learn skills are valuable because they are rare. Most people simply aren't willing to put in the work. You can have the most valuable skill in the world, but if everyone else has it, then it's a commodity. This is why people don't get paid millions of dollars if they know CPR even though it can save someone's life.
Durable skills are valuable because you can use them for the rest of your life. They don't go out-of-date. Reading, writing, and math are great examples. They took years to learn, but now you use them every single day. Consider two people. One learns the latest in-demand skill that goes out-of-date every 5 years. The other person learns a new, durable skill every five years that lasts forever. After 50 years, the first person will have just one skill and the other person will have 10 diverse skills they can use tandem!
Most people are looking for the latest in-demand skill that is easy to learn. This is why most people are playing catchup. They are only learning skills once they are NOT rare and everyone agrees they are important. They are learning skills that other people can quickly copy. Therefore, they are learning "commodity" skills.
If you want to get ahead in your career, you should learn a skill that is hard, valuable, and durable. Then, you should learn another skill, then another skill—stacking one skill upon another until you have a diverse skillset that allows you to do and think things that few other people can even imagine.
This is why I've spent the last five years identifying and then learning the hardest to learn, most valuable, and durable skills in the world... and teaching them to others through in-depth articles (viewed tens of millions of times on Forbes, Time, Fortune, and the Harvard Business Review) and courses.
